The corporate stuff gets a bit convoluted. There is a distinction between Svenska Aero AB formed in 1921 and Svenska Aeroplan AB (Aktiebolaget) formed in April 1937. The latter was a subsidiary of Bofors-NOHAB and AB ERS (or 'AB Ars'), a division of Electrolux. Here's a bit of a timeline:

1921 - Svenska Aero AB formed by Carl Bücker to license-build* a/c in Sweden
-- * Caspar-Werke and Heinkel designs (actually, early airframes were a mix of local construction and components secretly built by Caspar-Werke in Germany)

1922 - Svenska Aero AB construction was moved to Lidingö outside Stockholm
-- Using shipyard facilities of Gustafsson & Anderssons Varvs & Mekaniska

1930 - ASJA (AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstädernas Aeroplanavdelning) formed
-- ASJA was the aircraft division of ASJ (Swedish Railway Workshops)

1930 - Anders Johan Andersson joins Svenska Aero AB as chief designer
-- Anders Johan Andersson had come back to Sweden from Messerschmitt

1932 - Svenska Aero AB bankrupt, Carl Bücker returns to Germany**
-- ** CC Bücker had become a naturalized Swedish citizen in 1922

1932 - Dec 1932, Svenska Aero AB bought by ASJA

1933 - AJ Andersson leaves to join Bücker Flugzeugbau GmbH

1936 - ASJA in discussions with Bofors to form a joint company

1937 - Jan 1937 agreement to equally divided shares between ASJA and Bofors

1937 - 31 March 1937 AB Förenade Flygverkstäder (AFF) formed
-- AB Förenade Flygverkstäder = United Aircraft Workshops, Ltd

1937 - 20 April 1937, official date of establishment at Trollhättan

1938 - Summer 1938, new aircraft production plant completed

1939 - March 1939 firm reorganized as Svenska Aeroplan AB (SAAB)
-- Svenska Aeroplan AB = Swedish Aeroplane Ltd.

Svenska Aero AB - Original Aircraft 'SA' Designations

The original aircraft designs for Svenska Aero follow a numerical sequence. The only model with any variants is the SA-14 Jaktfalk but, AFAIK, these sub-types are identified by Jaktfalk mark numbers rather than any change or suffixes to the SA-14 designations.

SA-10 - 1929 Piraten 2-seat biplane twin-float trainer
- SA-10: 1 x 215 hp AS Lynx 7-cyl, span 10.40 m, x 2
-- Flygvapnet desig. Ö 7 (Övningsflygplan/Advanced Trainer)

SA-11 - 1930 Jaktfalk single-seat biplane fighter, span 9 m
- SA-11: Prototype, 1 x 500 hp AS Jaguar 14-cyl radial
-- Flygvapnet desig. J 5, x 2 (1 for export to Norway)

SA-12 - 1929 Skolfalken 2-seat biplane basic trainer
- SA-12: 1 x 135 hp AS Mongoose 5-cyl, span 9.35 m
-- Flygvapnet desig. Sk 8, aka Typ I trainer, x 1
-- http://www.avrosys.nu/aircraft/Skol/408Sk8.htm

SA-13 - 1930 Övningsfalken advanced biplane trainer
- SA-13: 1 x 200 hp AS Lynx 7-cyl radial, span 9.35 m
-- Övningsfalken (Practice Falcon) more powerful SA-12
-- Flygvapnet desig. Ö 8,* aka Typ II trainer, x 1
-- * Övningsflygplan 8 (Practice Aircraft 8)

SA-14 - 1930 Jaktfalk single-seat biplane fighter, span 9 m
- J 6 : Jaktfalk I, 1 x 450 hp Bristol Jupiter VI, x 8
- J 6A: Jaktfalk II, 1 x 500 hp Jupiter VIIF, x 3
- J 6B: Jaktfalk II, ASJA-built, mod. tail, x 6
-- NB: All J 6A SA 14s later mod. to J 6B standards
-- http://www.avrosys.nu/aircraft/Jakt/106j6/106J6.htm

SA-15 - [Project] 1931 2-seat light recce biplane
- SA-15: SA-12 deriv., 1 x ordered, cancelled 1932
-- SA-15 military designation was to be S 8

ASJA (AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstädernas Aeroplanavdelning)

ASJA aircraft were given 'L' (for Linköping) designations. However, the sequence is interrupted. with no evidence for L 3 through L 9 designations. That leaves seven missing ASJA designations.

A partial explanation for 'missing' designations may be in the six licensed-production types built between the L 2 and L 10 types ... leaving one 'missing' number. No 'L' designation is known for the Viking II cabin monoplane. It is possible that the Viking II makes up that missing 'L' number. But, of course, this is all speculation ;)

After 1937, designs and projects are often referred to as AFF/ASJA. This was because of the merger with Bofors-NOHAB which formed AB Förenade Flygverkstäder. Perhaps these aircraft should be referred to as AFF products, but ASJA was simply better known.

Note that AFF/ASJA were initially in competition with Svenska Aeroplan AB (SAAB). It was not until March 1939 that SAAB was reformed to take over ASJA.

Later ASJA designs are often referred to by their Flygvapnet 'P' for Provflygplan (trials aircraft) designations. Usually, a 'P' designation without a suffix refers to the actual Flygvapnet project. A 'P' designation with a suffix letter refers to the submitted design.
