As I always say "Hope this isn't old news" (i.e. if it's been posted before, let me know and I'll take it down) but here is a patent due to James S. McDonnell Jr.
Filing date May 11th, 1940:
"It has for its principal objects to provide an efficient means for cooling the engine coolant, the engine lubricant, and the coolant for a liquid cooled, intercooler for the supercharged air for the engine. A further principal object is the utilization of the cooling system to control the boundary layer of the wing to increase the lift coefficient and to increase the maximum ratio of lift to drag." https://www.google.com/patents/US2340396
The illustrations seem very reminiscent of the (ever-wonderful) McDonnell Model 1 (R40C).
Thanks and all best, 'Wingknut'
