Fictional Warships - Novels

robunos said:
Not sure if this really belongs here, as the ship is only incidental to the plot . . .

Not a problem including this one. Hood and I actually discussed this one and it is on his listing.

Now onto something that I had internally debated, for some time.

J. E. MacDonnell, Combat Assignment, 1967

United States

Unnamed
PT Boat

Unnamed
Fubuki (?) Author refers to it as both a 'Hubuki' and a 'Sigure' Class.)) Class Destroyer
Details as per the real ships.
Note: Details (5 x 5 inch guns, 1700 tons) could actually fit several classes in service during WWII

Unnamed
Nagato Class Battleship
Details as per the real ships
Note: What happens in the novel did not happen to the Nagato, or Mutsu (Sunk 1943.), so this is most likely a fictional third member of the class.

Unnamed
Seven Destroyers, unspecified class

Plot summary: It is late 1944 or early 1945 and an American PT boat is ordered to rescue an Australian Coastwatcher.

Note: If anyone is wondering about the high portion of unnamed ships, in the circumstances described, the Americans on the PT Boat (Referred to as "...the 44 boat..." in the novel.) would only know what class of warship they were shooting at, it would be up to the intelligence people to figure out just which ship they shot at.

Japan

Hiro
Myoko Class Cruiser
Details as per the real ships

Plot summary: As the last convoy to escape Singapore before it fell heads south, it comes under attack from the Japanese Navy.

Note: There is no publication date for the copy I have, but a note on the first page said the comic had first been published in 1990, implying what I have is a later reprint. This is only the third time I've read anything featuring a Monitor vs a conventional warship engagement as the climactic battle, other stories using this idea on this thread are Douglas Reeman's HMS Saracen and Alan Evans's Ship of Force.

NRP Corte-Real (F332)
Vasco Da Gama Class Frigate
Details as in service

Sierra Leone

MV Onyx
Armed Merchantman (Converted VLCC Oil Tanker)
Armament: Particle Accelerator powered by 2 nuclear reactors removed from a Typhoon Class Submarine. Capable of disabling a ship (Of typical bulk freighter size.) and killing anyone not deep within the ships hull. Discharge point is at the bow, weapon can only be aimed by turning the ship.
Dimensions, not specified, but can be guessed from the average dimensions of a 300,000 ton supertanker.
Engines: Diesel (Nuclear reactors only provide power to the ships 'special systems'.)
Other system fitted: An array of super-magnets code-named 'Fulcrum', mounted amidships in the former oil tanks, these can be used to bend the beam of a larger particle accelerator located 10 km off the Sierra Leone coast beyond the visible horizon
In addition the ship carries three minisubs, one is a 110ft (33.5m) cargo vessel called 'The Bus', the other two are minisubs of an unspecified type armed with two torpedoes (Also of an unspecified type) mounted externally.
Ship is not formally part of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces Naval Component, it is registered to a Liberian front company and crewed by mercenaries.

Unnamed
12 (+) Minisubs, presumably identical to the two carried by the MV Onyx.
Described as being "...no larger than a family car..."
Armament: Probably two torpedoes mounted externally.

Non-ship, but interesting.

The Big Particle Accelerator.
This is a 15km diameter loop constructed beneath the sea floor about 10km off the Sierra Leone coast (Location is implied to be in Yawri Bay, south of Freetown.) under the guise of an oil and gas drilling project. The four oil rig structures conceal the power plants and control systems for the accelerator. Exact power output is not specified, but is capable of bringing down all targets in line-of-sight (These involve short bursts of only a few seconds or less, later a 60 second burst is fired in an attempt to destroy Washington DC.). The beam is emitted from a firing tube that has to be raised above the surface of the sea before it can fire. Aiming is by super-magnets mounted on the firing tube. Over-the-horizon targets can be hit with the aid of the 'Fulcrum' super-magnet array mounted on the MV Onyx.

Also mentioned are patrol boats of an unspecified type, these are probably the 7 Type-62 FACs known to be operated by the RSLAF Naval Component.

Plot summary: The discovery of a ship crippled by something that cooked the crew from the inside out and certain strange events off the coast of the Azores, leads to the discovery that Sierra Leone has been spending international aid on something it should not have been...

Note: This is a very 'James Bond Film' type story as might be guessed from the above. Quite fun though...

MV Mongol Invader

Beam: 360ft (110m)
Engines produce 60,000 Shp, two shafts.
Armament: Hand held missile launchers of unspecified type, both SAM and SSM.
Owned by the Cerberus Corporation

Plot summary: A horrific fire at sea marks the beginning of a devious plot.

Note: This is one of two novels (The other being 'Trojan Odyssey '.) that marks Clive Cusslers retirement from being sole author of the Dirk Pitt portion of the Cusslerverse. Aside from retconning 'Pacific Vortex' the first written of the Dirk Pitt novels, the novel also manages to link the authors universe with that of Jules Verne's Captain Nemo... History buffs will be interested to know that the opening fire at sea is based on the 1934 SS Morro Castle fire.

Larry Jerram-Croft, Sea Skimmer, 2011

United Kingdom

HMS Prometheus
Leander Class
Details as per the members of the class given the Batch 3 Exocet/Seawolf conversion.

Plot summary: Fictionalized account of the Falklands War (2 April - 14 June 1982) centered around attempts to keep the Argentinians from using Exocet missiles. Unlike the novels 'The White Vixen' and 'Beneath Sunless Waters', which I have covered earlier in this list. The novel takes a much more realistic view of the war and events leading up to it.

Larry Jerram-Croft, Cocaine, 2012

United Kingdom

HMS Chester
Type 22 Frigate (Batch 2)
Details as per the real ships.
Note: Has had the hanger modified so she can carry one Sea King helicopter and one Lynx helicopter instead of two Lynxes.

Germany (WWII)

U-557
Type XX U-Boat (Modified)
Details as per the unbuilt class
Armament: Adds 4 bow torpedo tubes. Tubes are loaded with G7a torpedoes. No reloads. Also adds a Gun (Unspecified type probably the 4.1 inch gun used on other U-boats along with the AA armament intended for the class 1 x 37mm & 1 twin 20mm gun.) forward of the conning tower.
Note: Fitted with a snorkel. Later salvaged and used by a Colombian Cartel. Pennant number clashes with a Type VIIC U-boat that served 1940-41.

Plot summary: The year is 1984 (Author does not specify this but the novel prior to this one ('The Caspian Monster') is set in 1983.). The Colombian Drug Cartels have found a new way of getting their products into the United States. Along with a ship from the Royal Navy a plan is hatched to hit the cartels hard.

Note: This is a late entry into the 'unleash the military on the drug cartels' genre that was popular in the late 80s/early 90s timeframe, other books like it on this list are 'Clear and Present Danger' (1989), 'Hammerheads' (1990) and 'Sea Wolf' (1991), the last named of which also features a Royal Navy Type 22 (Batch 2) Frigate. The novel itself is the third in an eight book series that starts with 'Sea Skimmer'.

Larry Jerram-Croft, Arapaho, 2012

United Kingdom

RFA Arapaho (A131)
Aviation Support Ship (Converted Container Ship)
Details are identical to RFA Reliant (A131)
Carries: 5 Sea King Helicopters.
Note: Author in his end notes states that this is a fictional version of RFA Reliant. He does not give the name of the container ship prior to conversion.

Plot summary: The year is 1985 (From details provided in the book it would appear to run from March '85 to the end of the year.), the series hero, following his actions in the novel Cocaine has been promoted to command a new helicopter squadron (844 Naval Air Squadron.) part of which has been detached to serve aboard an experimental RFA ship. Following a harrowing evacuation of Lebanon a new crisis emerges when an obscure pro-Palestinian group hijacks the P & O liner Uganda.

Note: The novel is loosely based on actual events, most notably the Achille Lauro hijacking (October 1985) which is referred to in the past tense suggesting that the finale of the novel involving the hijacking of the Uganda takes place after those events. The novel itself is the fourth in an eight book series that starts with 'Sea Skimmer'.

No other details provided

Plot summary: A first officers desire to avenge himself on the commander of a German raider leads him into increasingly dangerous situations.

In the story it is to be stated to be a month old when sunk. If the stories final battle is Jutland then she may be a Bayern class.

SMS Wörth

Turkey

Yavuz Sultan Selim (ex-SMS Goeben)
Battlecruiser
Real ship, details as in service.
Note: In real life scrapped in 1973. In novel torpedoed by HMS Q18 and heavily damaged.

Plot summary: Early in WWI the captain of a light cruiser and the captain of a submarine make a bet over just which weapon, torpedo or gun, is going to be the more effective in the conflict.

Note: Identification of the three German battleships I have tentatively identified as being additional members of the Bayern Class is purely speculative, none of the combat sequences in this book save the last conform to any actual event. The last battle may be a distorted version of Jutland, however it is of interest for one other reason, it bares some resemblance to the type of battle the Japanese planned to fight in any future war against the US following WWI, with surface warships and submarines operating together.

John Margerison, The Hungry Hundred, 1918

HMS Egypt
Cressy Class Cruiser
Details as per the real ships.

HMS Cretan
Cressy Class Cruiser
Details as per the real ships.

HMS Mogul

Note: Member of a Pre-WWI class of Destroyer.
This is the same ship of that name that appears in the authors short story collection 'Destroyer Doings'.

HMS Alabama
Armed Merchant Cruiser
2 x 6 inch guns
2 x 3pdrs
No other details provided

HMS Alps
Armed Merchant Cruiser
No other details provided

Germany

Essen
Armed Merchant Cruiser (Commerce Raider)
Armament: 4 x 5.9 inch, 1 x 4.1 inch, 2 x TT
Other details probably identical to the raider Mowe as the author describes her as being "...of the Mowe type..."
Note: Name is not correct for a commerce raider of this type as the Imperial German Navy preferred to use animal names.

Plot Summary: Follows the career of a group of Naval Reservists and the Regular Navy officer assigned to make them into a fighting crew.

Notes: This book while not the authors last, is the first one I have read that feels like a novel, albiet one divided into three episodes, the first ends with a modified version of the sinking of HMS Aboukir, Cressy & Hogue (22 September 1914), the second with a modified version of the sinking of the German commerce raider Grief (29 February 1916), the last is what is most likely the Battle of Jutland (May 31 - 1 June 1916). The author also makes it quite clear that the events described in the collections 'Destroyer Doings' and 'Hunters of the U-Boat' form part of the same 'universe' as this story and most likely they take place between early October 1914 and May 1916, that is, assuming that the fictional events the author uses as 'section dividers' are taking place on the same day as their real world equivalents.

Brian Callison, The Bone Collectors, 1984

United Kingdom

HMS Apple Blossom
Flower Class Corvette

Canada

HMCS Trois-Rivières

2 x 40mm Bofors Guns
No other details provided.

Plot summary: The time is early 1941 and convoy "...SC whatever-it-was..." travels across the Atlantic into the teeth of the German U-Boat wolfpacks.

Note: Novel is focussed on the activities of the rescue ship in the convoy, the 'bone collectors' of the title, not the escorts.

Douglas Reeman, Strike From The Sea, 1978

United Kingdom

HMS Arielle
A Class (Interwar) Destroyer (?)
Details as per the real ships
Note: Class determination solely based on the ships name.

HMS Tigress

France

Japan

Sudsuya
Aircraft Carrier, class not specified
27,000 tons
Airgroup: 60 (+) Aircraft
Stated to be newest carrier in Japanese fleet, authors description is quoted:

God she was big all right. Like a great ugly flat-iron. She had no visible funnels, they were built in long trunks half the length of the ship, tailing off outboard at the after end. The bridge too was cut as low as the flight deck.

Douglas Reeman

The above suggests that she may be a converted battleship like the Kaga and Akagi.

Unnamed
Submarine, class not specified
Armament: 1 x 3 inch gun, torpedoes.
No other details provided

Unnamed
Kagerō Class Destroyer
Details as per the real ships

Unnamed
1 x 'Heavy Cruiser'
2 x 'Destroyers'
Several transports

Plot summary: An experienced submarine officer is sent to bring one of the worlds largest submarines into British service. Succesfully keeping her out of Japanese hands, he finds himself commanding the submarine in increasingly desperate missions in the days following Japans entry into WWII.

Note (Spoiler): Chris Mayger's cover for the 1978 hardback release depicts the climactic naval action of the novel. The way the novel ends makes me speculate that the author may have considered writing a sequel to this novel, but obviously if that was the intent it never eventuated.

Another 'Self-published on Amazon' technothriller...

Liam Robert Mullen, Pacific Deeps, 2017

United States

USS Obama (SSN-???)
Virginia Class Submarine
Details as per the real ships
Note: Unlikely name. While the novel is undated, the description of the sitting US President (Unnamed in the novel) implies it takes place during Barack Obama's second term.

Korea (Democratic Peoples Republic)

Details as per the real ships
Note: Operating under false Chinese identity in novel.

Plot summary: As the situation on the Korean Peninsula edges closer to war, a brutal murder takes place aboard a United States submarine, with the situation worsening the investigators have to come to the sub.

A. P. Kobryn, Poseidon's Shadow, 1979

United States

USS Adresteia (SSBN-???)
Mjölnir Class Submarine (Fictional)
Crew: 150
Armament: 24 x Trident Missiles, 'Homing Torpedos' (Mk. 48?), UUM-44 SUBROC
Length: 560 ft (170 m)
Weight: 17,000 tons
Equipment: Passive Sonar, Laser communications system
Speed: Unspecified (Surfaced)/40(+) knots (Submerged)
Note: The author spells the class name as Mjollnir, I have employed editorial discretion in this case. The few details he gives of the submarine and it's the armament (Less the SUBROC.) fit the Ohio Class, so most likely this is a fictional version of the Ohio Class, the first of which entered service (In real life) in 1981.

USS Orcus (SSN-???)
Orcus Class Submarine (Fictional)
Armament: 'Homing Torpedos' (Mk. 48?), UUM-44 SUBROC
Equipment: Passive Bow/Lateral/Towed Sonar, Active Sonar, Underwater laser range finder, Laser communications system
Speed: Unspecified (Surfaced)/40(+) knots (Submerged) Author states that full submerged speed is "...considerably in excess of fourty knots."
Note: Described by the author as "...an attack submarine, latest of the type...". At the time the novel was written/published, (Late 1970s) the newest American SSN class was the Los Angeles Class (First member commissioned in 1976.), so this is most likely a fictional version of the Los Angeles Class. Unless someone can come up with a proposed Los Angeles Class successor that was being discussed in the late 1970s.

And for the Aircraft mavens a non-ship item:

"Stealth, or, more precisely Stealth F, sixth variant of the original project, was painted in shades of grey, an eerily streamlined deltoid aircraft of almost alien aspect. It was most often referred to as "Blackbird" though the nickname was first applied to a distant predecessor. Officially neither nickname nor aircraft existed."

A. P. Kobryn, Poseidon's Shadow

The above is not an SR-71, the authors described mission profile seems very different from that plane (I cannot see an SR-71 being flown at 50ft altitude, even for a short period to avoid radar...). Crew is two, Pilot/Mission specialist.

Russia

Unnamed
Submarine (SSBN), Class not specified
Armament: 24 Missiles of an unspecified type, torpedoes
Note: As with ships in the novels 'The Hammer of God' and 'White Plague' this submarine remains unnamed despite scenes being set aboard her.

Plot summary: The discovery that the Soviet Union has deployed ground based ASAT particle-beam weapons in Siberia leads to turmoil within the United States government.

Notes: Assigning a precise year for when this story is set is not possible. The story starts on the 21st of December, but the author does not state what day of the week it is, so using a calendar to pin down the year is not possible. The best that can be done is to say that it takes place in the 1979 - 1989 time frame, with a bias towards the 1983 - 1989 end of things, many of the things the author includes, Tomahawk Missiles (Entered service in 1983), USAF operated space shuttles, laser submarine communications systems and the Soviet ground based ASAT system (Which was actually a mis-identification of testing of the RD-0410 nuclear thermal rocket engine.) were all ideas discussed during the late 1970s, that were expected to become operational in that time-frame. As a minor point of trivia the author seems to have bought into the 'Global Cooling' notion that existed around that time, since increased polar ice is a plot element in the story.

Plot wise this is another story involving a ballistic missile submarine going rogue through the actions of it's crew, stories I've covered involving this kind of plot include, 'Two Hours to Darkness' (1963) and 'Warhead' (2011). This novel is closer to 'Warhead' in that it involves a crew going rogue to force a governments hand, what makes this one different from those novels, is that it features the element of 'demanding monies with menaces' that puts this closer to terrorist plot-lines like 'The Triton Ultimatum' (1977) and 'Sons of God' (2008). At least this one avoids the mistake made by the author of 'Warhead' (2011) in that it presents an ending where there is the possibility that the crew of the USS Adresteia may have to face the consequences of their actions.

No biographical details are provided for the author, but based on the naming scheme they chose for the two American submarines I have the feeling they were British.

HMS Centaur
2nd Ocean Class Amphibious Assault Ship (?)
Details as per the real ships
Note: Ship is referred to as a 'Helicopter Carrier'. The previous HMS Centaur was a Centaur Class Carrier that was used in this role until 1972. As the current HMS Ocean is the successor to that role in the Royal Navy it is logical that this ship is a second member of the Ocean Class.

HMS Vindictive
5th Vanguard Class Submarine
Details as per the real ships
Note: If the HMS Valiant from the novel 'The Valiant' is counted this would be the sixth Vanguard. During the novel the submarine is modified to carry a DSRV.

RMAS Salminster
4th Sal Class Mooring/Salvage Vessel
Details as per real ships
Note: Referred to as 'MV Salmister' in the novel. In real life ships of the Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service (Which existed until 2009.) used the prefix RMAS. The correct prefix has been used as an editorial decision.

Norway

NoCGV Nordvik
4th Nordkapp Class Offshore Patrol Vessel
Details as per the real ships.
Note: As with the ship above the author refers to the ship as 'MV Nordvik' in the novel, the correct prefix for the Norwegian Coast Guard has been used as an editorial decision.

Russia
(Note: All ships are real.)

Gepard (K-335)
Akula Class Submarine
Details as in service

Yuriy Dolgorukiy (K-535)
Borei Class Submarine
Details as in service.
Note: Submarines name is spelt 'Uriy Dolgorukiy' in the novel. Editorial discretion has been used in this case. The first member of the Borei Class was supposed to be completed in 2002, but due to budget issues was not completed until 2007.

Plot summary: The year is 2004, an American submarine watching the tests of Russia's latest ballistic missile submarine collides with another Russian submarine and sinks to the bottom of the Norwegian Sea. With the Russians unable to assist thanks to the loss of their submarine rescue capability due to budget constraints, the race begins to get Western assets, including the last remaining DSRV to Norway in the hope of saving the crew.

Note: The authors introduction states that he finished writing the book shortly before the sinking of the Oscar Class Submarine Kursk (K-141) in 2000. As to dating when the story is set, it runs from Thursday, 28th October to Friday, 5th November. The first year this happens after the year of publication is 2004 and given that the first Borei Class Submarines were supposed to be completed in 2002 it seems safe to assume that the novel is set in 2004.

Note: The novel is the first in a series of novels following this character. Another novel using the same setting, but not formally part of the series by this author is 'Fighting Submarine' (1978), which I have covered earlier in this thread. The novel has been re-issued as an E-book in 2018 via Amazon.

USS Savo Island (CG-???)
Ticonderoga Class Cruiser

USS Monocacy (CG-???)
Ticonderoga Class Cruiser
Details as per the class members fitted with VLS.

Both ships are fitted with prototype Ballistic Missile Defence software/missiles (SM2 Block 4A). It is also implied in novel that the Aegis Combat system includes a fully autonomous combat mode (Only intended for defensive use...) descended from the system tested out aboard the Kidd Class Destroyer USS Barrett (DDG-998) in the novel 'The Passage' (1995).

Plot summary: As the US gets ready to attack Iraq following 9/11 (Bush the Youngers War), Dan Lenson, an officer considered the best person to bring troubled ships back to fighting trim (As he did in 'China Sea' (2000) and 'The Command' (2004).) is assigned to a new ship, one carrying a prototype weapons system, but suffering from a dispirited/splintered command team and a mysterious illness. Will he be able to turn the ship around, or will he end up like the last captain, fronting a board of inquiry.

Note: Up to this book, the Dan Lenson series has roughly paralleled actual history, this is the first novel to seriously diverge from historical events that I have read.

United Kingdom

HMS Graplin
Grampus Class Submarine(?)
Details as per the real ships.
Launched 1937

Abe Ariel, The Last War, 1988

Algeria

Al Joumhouria
Kilo Class Submarine(?)
Details as per the real ships

Sidi Fradj (M???)
T-43 Class Minesweeper
Details as per the real ships

Plot summary: The story takes place between 1988 and 1990 and focuses on international intrigue surrounding the then rumored Israeli nuclear program and how the actions of pro-Palestinian groups in the West create a situation that leads to all out nuclear war in the Middle East.

Note: The authors start point seems to have been the 1979 Vela Incident, which some still hold to have been a clandestine nuclear test involving both Israel and South Africa. All of the Israeli ships mentioned in the novel were real vessels in service at the time the novel was written.

Iain M Banks, from the novel Use of Weapons (1990). Banks with the M is associated with space opera, but he invented a few worlds with approximately mid-twentieth century culture (no pun intended) and technology. This features the battleship Staberinde. Little detail is given, but its architecture seems to be concentric with point-defence weapons surrounding the main armament which are cannons with about 'half a metre' calibre. It's apparently a super-Yamato type, which is used in a Yamato-like strategy of deliberate beaching to provide gunnery support. In the novel, its use in battle is less important than its role in psychological warfare involving a white chair...

An interesting find. Speaking of which I've managed to locate a later printing of Douglas Reeman's 'The Path of the Storm' which I suspect was the last physical printing of the novel before the switch to ebooks (So after 1988.) the novels 'data page' does not indicate the year of printing, nor does it indicate who did the storm scene that graces the novels cover, which makes for an interesting contrast with the Chris Mayger battle scene that dominates the cover of the 1984 printing. From the art style I am going to guess that it is by Geoffrey Huband, who supplied covers for the final round of print editions.

Unnamed
4 x S-boats
No other details provided.

Italy

Unnamed
Various warships.

Plot summary: As the WWII in the Mediterranean heats up following the German invasion of Greece lives are endangered by one captains attempts to prove himself and his ship.

Note: This novel is interesting for a number of reasons, first up the copyright notice is undated, which is something I've never seen in a book before. Secondly this novel makes it quite clear while the author is concerned with getting his ships details consistent from book to book, it would appear that he regarded history in much looser terms. The climax of the book is the Battle of Matapan (27-29 March 1941), however right at the start of the novel he mentions that a character is recovering from injuries sustained fighting the Japanese (Japan entered WWII on the 7th of December 1941.), which indicates he was simply trying to evoke a general period during the war with each book, rather than a coherent series of novels. More seriously the end of this novel contradicts a story ('The Coxswain'.) that was published in 1960.

The cover is appears to be by the same unnamed artist who supplied the cover for the 1979 novel 'Breaking Point', but while it is inspired by events in the novel, HMAS Pelican is not a V & W Class destroyer.

I have managed to put together a stitched together version of the front/back and spine of the novels cover, which can be accessed via the link below:

No explanation is given for the use of USS Thresher's pennant number on what is clearly meant to be a fictional version of USS Scorpion. The cover picture, which blends features from several different Soviet submarine classes is by Paul Wright, who also supplied the cover art for 'Two Hours to Darkness'

USS Moran
Warship of unspecified type/class
Only detail provided is that the main gun armament is two 5 inch guns, one forward, one aft. This armament would fit either the Spruance or Kidd Class Destroyers.

United Kingdom

HMS Argyll
County Class Destroyer?
Details as per the real ships.
Note: Author refers to this ship as a 'Guided Missile Light Cruiser' but the limited details he provides best fits the County Class. However at one point he describes the ship as having identical gun armament to the USS Moran, given that the Royal Navy does not use 5 inch guns, nor a fore and aft gun layout, I suspect this is a mistake on the authors part.

Realizing that they have the Soviets over a barrel, they negotiate a hard deal for the wheat needed to stave off starvation in Russia, knowing that as they do so there is a faction of the Supreme Soviet willing to go to war to take the food they need. Then two Jews flee to the west and the Soviet negotiators make their return a precondition of the wheat deal. Before any decision can be made on this unexpected demand hijackers take over an oil tanker off the Dutch coast and threaten ecological catastrophe unless the two men are allowed to go to Israel. HMS Duke of Cumberland
King George V Class Battleship
Details as per the real ships
Note: One of the characters specifically refers to the ship as a battleship and while only the secondary armament is mentioned, only the King George V Class and HMS Vanguard used 5.25 inch guns as the secondary armament, hence this ship must be a King George V Class Battleship.

The 1994 printing appears to have been the last time, at least in the UK that artwork as opposed to digitally manipulated images were used on the cover of an Alistair MacLean novel.

Note: One of the characters specifically refers to the ship as a battleship and while only the secondary armament is mentioned, only the King George V Class and HMS Vanguard used 5.25 inch guns as the secondary armament, hence this ship must be a King George V Class Battleship.

The Lion class too would had 5,25" DP-AA guns

Thanks for the extra info, that is interesting suggestion, but there is not enough information provided, so in this case I think it's best to play safe. I hope you find something in the pages of this thread worth illustrating.

Destroyer, class not specified

Unnamed
Submarine, class not specified

Cuba

Unnamed
Gunboat, class not specified
No other details provided.

Plot summary: It is the 'Day after Tomorrow'. As Castro nears death (In real life he died in 2016.), it is revealed that following the Cuban Missile crisis in the 60's the Russians had in fact installed several missiles on the island which they left in place. Still in working order, their nuclear warheads have been replaced with powerful biological agents. As a vicious power struggle develops in Cuba over the succession, the United States finds itself forced to act to prevent their use.

Note: The author gives no clue as to just what year the story is set, so the 'near future' relative to date of publication rule applies in this case.

Note: In real life the ship was sold to Chile in 1982. In the novel she is still in British service as of 1988. Later on in the novel the same ship is referred to as RFA Tidespring (A75), which was retained in British service until 1991.

United States

USS Sacagawea (CG-??)
Ticonderoga Class Cruiser
Details as per the real ships.
Note: The author refers to the ship as a 'Ticonderoga Class Aegis Destroyer' in the novel. At the time the story is set the name was not used by any US Warship. The last ship to bear the name was a navy tugboat (USS Sacagawea (YT-326)) sold overseas in 1946. The most recent ship to bear the name was the second ship (USNS Sacagawea (T-AKE-2)) of the Lewis and Clark Class of dry cargo ships launched in 2006. The name does not fit with the scheme chosen for the Ticonderoga Class, which is famous American battles.

Plot summary: Some three years after harrowing events of 'Arapaho' (The novel runs 1988 - 1989.), the series hero Jon Hunt has become involved in searching for a leak in the Ministry of Defence while his wife (Met during the events of 'Arapaho'.) earns her wings as a Helicopter Pilot. Desperate for a sea position, opportunity comes with the death of the commander of the ship he served on during the Falklands War.

Note: Quite an interesting story, especially for those who grew up in the 1980s, let down by some editing glitches. This is the fifth novel in the series that begins with 'Sea Skimmer'.

Mercer is the name of the CIA contact used by the mercenaries.

A break from the technothrillers with a comic book, with apologies to Hood...

Anon., Undefeated, published as Commando Comics Nº. 4945, 2016

United Kingdom

HMS Undefeated
U Class Submarine
Details as per the real ships

HMS Unyielding
U Class Submarine
Details as per the real ships
Note: Specifically identified as being a member of the U Class.

HMS Urgent
U Class Submarine
Details as per the real ships

HMS Undeterred
U Class Submarine

Germany

Unnamed
S-Boat
Details as per the real ships.

Plot summary: The year is 1942, a hard driving British submarine captains confidence is shaken after a mission to land an SBS team in Greece goes badly wrong.

Notes: It's nice to be able to fairly precisely date when this came out, a note at the back indicates it was printed for the week of the 8th of September, 2016. It's also nice to read one of these and find that the warship names are at last appropriate for the class.

Another comic book, this one is posted with thanks to Hood for his help in identifying the sources for the illustrations used and what the author probably actually had in mind for the main ship.

Anon., The Call of Duty, published as Battle Picture Library Nº. 1417, ?

United Kingdom

HMS Whip (K301)
Frigate, class not specified
Weight: 1495 tons
Armament (Main Battery): 6 x 4 inch DP guns (Presumably in twin mounts.)
Armament (Other): 20mm Guns, Depth charges
Commissioned 1940 (Story takes place in 1942, ship is stated to have commissioned in Portsmouth two years previously.)
Note: The armament details and the date of commission (But not the weight.) best fit the Black Swan Class Sloops, however the illustrator depicts the ship as a Castle Class Corvette, the first of which went into service in 1943. I have not been able to confirm if the pennant clashes with any real ship, the illustration only shows the pennant as '301', K prefix is appropriate for Frigates which is what the ship is described as, this does not change if the ship were a Corvette as illustrated.

HMS Tyrant
Battleship, class not specified
Armament (Main Battery): Triple barrelled turrets of unspecified caliber, only A & B turrets are visible
Armament (Secondary battery): Twin barreled turrets of unspecified caliber
Twin Funnels
No other details provided
Note: The artist for the comic book chose to base the appearance of this ship on the Italian Andrea Doria Class of battleships (As modified interwar.) for unknown reasons. What is following is the speculated main/secondary armament based on the armament of the battleships retained by the British following the signing of the Washington Treaty and also the layout of the Andrea Doria class following their interwar modernization. If anyone is interested I have scanned the page on which the ship appears and can provide it at request.
Main Battery: 12 x 15 inch guns (Four Triple turrets A, B, X & Y)
Secondary Battery: 8 x 6 inch guns (Four twin turrets at the corners of the superstructure.)
Other weapons are presumably identical positions as per Andrea Doria but British equivalent guns.

Germany

U-15
U Boat, class not specified, illustration is too vague to determine class.
Note: Pennant clashes with a Type IIb Class U Boat that was sunk in an accidental collision on the 30th of January 1940.

Unnamed
Various S Boats
Note: One has a prominent number '3' painted near the bow, two others are numbered '10' and '42' respectively.

Plot summary: The year is 1942, the well knit team aboard a frigate suffers when the replacement for an injured crewman tries to apply 'big ship' discipline leading to a 'square peg in a round hole' situation.

Notes: As with all war comics (Like J. E. MacDonnell novels.) the emphasis is on creating the atmosphere of a general period in the war without being too concerned for accuracy, the artwork being a case in point, the author (Whoever they were.) also has the Siege of Tobruk carrying on into 1942 when it ended in November of 1941.
