I read somewhere that the Royal Navy had considered building an additional LPD to join FEARLESS and INTREPID. I think this was only a notional idea in a "wish list" for a larger fleet to stay East of Suez, but it did get me thinking. What would the ship have been called?

Knowing how the Royal Navy can on occasion resurect 'traditional' names, I can't help feeling that 'Vindictive' would have been an option. After all, the old cruiser was used for the assault on Zeebrugge in the First World War (NOT the later Cavendish class cruiser).

Vindictive is a highly appropriate name. HMS Intrepid in WWI was the foremost blockship used at Zeebrugge. However both Fearless and Intrepid as destroyers had very active WWIIs. Vindictive (III) spent WWII as a support ship.

Gallant, also an interwar Destroyer and in line with the characther of Fearless & Intrepid. Vindictive isn't really a suitable name for an Assault Ship patrolling the seas around our fomer colonies.
