BAD stood for Brone Avto Drezine or Draisine Armoured Car, meaning that its primary role was to act as a rail vehicle. There were two twin-turreted BAD designs - the BAD/BAD-1 and BAD-2. These were followed by the single-turreted Plavajushi Broneavtomobil or floating armored car models, PB-4 and PB-7.
The initial BAD design wasn't amphibious, that appeared with the BAD-2. The BAD-2 was sometimes referred to as the BAD-2 ZhD when operating on rails.
