This afternoon I was watching the Green Berets, and was reminded of the shape of the passenger compartment and that it has a large oblong "box" projecting from the rear bulkhead, leaving two narrow sections on each side of the compartment where the door gunners were situated. What is in that "box" section, is it a fuel tank, the transmission for the tail rotor or something else?

Sorry if it is a banal question, but it was one of those itches I needed to scratch.

Regards

I believe that Heuy mechanics called the enclosed volume "the hell hole". Accessible only from below, it contained fuel tanks, the main transmission and transmission driven accessories, like hydraulics.

Thanks for that, one itch well and truly scratched.

Regards.
