hi guys its a very interesting topic I really enjoy it!
Especially the G1M project the forerunner of the G3M Nell
keep op the good work!

Mitsubishi 8-shi Reconnaissance plane(三菱八試特殊偵察機 G1M1) was substantially a prototype of type 96 attack bomber, ordered in 1933(Showa 8),completed April 1934. Stability and controlability were excellent.
You can see chief designer Honjo(本庄季郎) under the left propeller.
Engine:Liquid cooled W12 91 type 500HP(sea level), Span:25m, Length:15.83m, Wing area:75m2, MTOW:7ton, Max speed:265.6km/h, Range:2,346km, Service ceiling:4,600m.
Honjo was the chief designer of G4M type 1 attack bomber which shot down easily by American fighter.
At the beginning of G6M plan, Honjo hoped to design 4 engined aircraft to realize hard to shot down bomber, but IJN rejected. Japan was very poor.

A Washingtonian navy arms-control pact held restriction for quantity possessed of the capital ships member countries of treaty possesses (battleship and battle cruiser). As a result, the large aircraft carriers which remodeled new construction capital ships were appeared.
Because this thing could cause complication of the doctrine in which an aircraft carrier and a carrier-based plane were taken and cause new armament expansion competition as aircraft carrier vigorousness, restriction was also applied to quantity possessed of an aircraft carrier by London treaty.
However, existence of an aircraft carrier was a potential threat as "the Japanese mainland air raid by an enemy aircraft carrier" for Japan.London navy disarmament conference was held in 1935 the second, and the IJN tried to achieve aircraft carrier abolition at the meeting, but failed.
The Shigeru Matsuyama lieutenant general who was an aerial general manager in the IJN went out on development of the long-distance torpedo plane considered for long because vigorousness of a surface ship became impossible for London treaty. A staff of Isoroku Yamamoto technical manager, Misao Wada technical development department chairman and the Yamagata Masaaki director members who participate later considered this long-distance torpedo plane every day. As a result, the "attack bomber for coasts” which can start from a land base and attack an enemy warship ship (mainly, enemy aircraft carrier) was contrived.
They were Hiro Naval arsenal and Mitsubishi that had the making ability of the large whole metal aircraft in the naval aircraft manufacturer in that day.
The IJN had initiated development of "7-shi special attack bomber" (later type 95 land attack bomber) to Hiro naval arsenal. Next the IJN ordered an experimental production of one "8-shi special reconnaissance aircraft" to Mitsubishi.
After making the first flight in (in 1934) April, 1934, the plan was changed and the 8-shi special reconnaissance aircraft was changed to the "8-shi medium attack bomber" which two 7.7 mm machine gun was loaded.
9-shi land attacker bomber was planned based on an outcome of this experimental production, and ordered Mitsubishi. Experimental production model completed in June 1935 and succeeded the first flight in July 1935. This aircraft was adopted formally as the type 96 land attack bomber in June 2 1936.

Folllowing side view shows G1M1 with Shinten 920hp aircooling engine.
Plan view and front view shows G1M1 with type 91 w shape liguid cooling 12 cylinders engine, 650hp

There were two G1M. Very complicated.
Anyway 8-shi special reconnaissance aircraft/8-shi medium land base attack bomber had a clean shape.
G1M was a prototype of G3M.

8-shi special reconnaissance plane accident picture.
You can see the detail of this aircraft in these pictures.
Chief designer of this aircraft Kiro Honjo experienced this accident.
In this accident, Honjo sat down next to the chief pilot. He was touching lightly by a control rod and fell to a nose of a plane.
Fortunately damage of the aircraft and the chief designer were small in this accident at landing.

Topic made up of bits and pieces from other topics.

The Ka-9 was further developed into the Ka-15, the prototype of the famous G3M "Nell":

There is sometimes confusion between this aircraft and the Mitsubishi 3MT5 (also referred to as "Mitsubishi G1M" and "Navy Experimental 7-shi Carrier Attack Bomber"). The 3MT5 was a biplane and the 8-shi experimental attack bomber was a monoplane, two completely different aircraft. How does it fit in with the G1M project?
