Not really familar with the Mustang story, this was an excellent buy. Lots of info on pre-war and wartime American fighter development generally, and Ed Schmued's career. It also continues on with briefer chapters on Ed's later work F-86, F-100 and Northrop F-5, the last design Ed Schmued worked on (though according to the book, Welko Gasich was the main designer and argued successfully against Ed's preference for wing mounted engines on that design) Author was an archivist at San Diego Aerospace Museum and had access to Ed's own notes and interviews with many key people.
 
Yes, it's an exceptional book on the Mustang - one I used for research to produce my own Mustang book which, I might add, has received good reviews. -SP
