Hi,

the French designer,G. R. Hamel was aviator and pilot, and he designed some
heavy civil flying boat projects, his activities started from 1935 up to 1945,he
created a 100,300,400 & 500 ton Projects.

Here is his 100 ton proposal,it was powered by eight engines,in twin fuselage
configuration.

From TU 183 & 230,

Mr. Goerges R. Hamel founded a C.L.E.N.A. (Centre Lutécien d'Études Nautiques et Aéronautiques) or Paris Center for Nautical and Aeronautical Studies in 1942,he designed two Types of Monoplanes as a tourist aircraft, and one called S20,as Amphibian twin engined airplane.

Also C.L.E.N.A. studied SCAM C.50 tourist airplane.

Me dear friend Hesham,

Do we have pictures of the 300 and 500 ton design?

Even allowing for the fact that the above vignette is a drawing, I have to say that the CLENA/SCAM C.50 looks remarkably similar to the Roussel 10 of 1938 but with a modified fin and rudder.

It does indeed. As a 4-seater, the C.50 would likely be slightly larger (does anyone have dimensions for the Roussel 10?). The tricycle C.50 would also have had almost three times as much power as the biplace Roussel.

Unfortunately I've found no dimensions given for the Roussel 10 in the contemporary press, just performance figures and the mention that it is powered by a 60cv Train engine.

Thank you my dear Schneiderman,

and I think that's was a 500 ton Project ?.

Maybe. The patent is full of construction detail but does not mention dimensions or weight - just tonnage élevé

I have just come across what appears to be a passing reference to Hamel that would seem to suggest that he was based in Britain in 1940, possibly one of those engineers, scientists, and other specialists seconded by the (pre-Battle of France) French government to various British government bodies and commercial concerns.

Could this C.L.E.N.A. S.20 twin-engine amphibian be the same as the S.E.C.A.T. S.20 amphibian, supposedly studied in 1943?
  • The C.L.E.N.A. was based in Paris, but is no longer found after 1945. Only three projects can be found in association with the C.L.E.N.A.: the SC.10 two-seat high wing cabin, the S.20 twin amphibian, and the C.50 tourist four-seater.
  • The S.E.C.A.T. was based in Boulogne, just outside Paris.
  • Official document shows that S.E.C.A.T. was created only in December 1945, so their S.20 couldn't have been a "SECAT" when it was conceived.
  • The S.E.C.A.T. federated designs from several companies and individuals: Gaucher S.4, RG.70, RG.75 and S.5, Delasalle L.D.45... My assumption is that the S.20 was just the C.L.E.N.A. design taken over by S.E.C.A.T. as well.
Thoughts?

Thank you for your effort, frankly SECAT was formed in 1938/39 as TU magazine,
no relationship between them, but we can assume that, so your opinion is very
near to logic, yes I agree.

I haven't found anything about SECAT before 1945, but of course I'll admit not everything is online, so it's possible indeed.
  • Earliest reference I could find was this entry in Le Quotidien Juridique dated 5-7 Dec. 1945, but on closer look it's not about the creation of the company, as I thought, but about Mr. Cousin selling one of his shares to Mr. Weil. The document also stipulates that from then onwards, and until 15 Dec. 1947, Weil will act as co-manager of the company alongside Mr. Joannès, with the power to act independently from him.
  • The second document is an item from L'Équipe, 1 Nov. 1946, which indicates that Joannès created the S.E.C.A.T. and designed the company's monoplanes, but doesn't say when the company started.
  • Third document deals with SECAT's bankrupcy, in Sep. 1950.
Just a thought: the CLENA was a "centre d'études", they didn't have the capacity to build anything. Since we know they turned to SCAM for construction of their C.50, maybe they turned to SECAT for construction of their S.20 ? Only a hypothesis of course.

Yes,and from an old encylopedia,it was established in 1938,but the most controversial thing,it seems to be there was a series,10,20 and may 30 & 40 before Type-50 was
appeared, the Tourist aircraft project shined before C.50 ?!.
