I think this Dornier aircraft was familiar.

Hi,

I don't know what was that tilt-wing aircraft for Dornier.

Seeing a topic is already made, I'm taking it back a bit. Now, I know this 1939 design likely did not result in an actual prototype. But, the novel thing about it is when an enemy plane attacks from behind, the "backseater" assumes control of the aircraft from the pilot to engage the enemy with the fixed rear guns. Not sure how practical that really is....

A 1938 design for a rather interestingly configured flying boat/aircraft. Certainly not a design which Dornier seemed to pursue but does show Claude Dornier's thinking. ;D

A 1920 flying boat design patent which does appear to have been turned into the Dornier Do J "Wal" (Do 16).

Not a Claude Dornier patent but one by Iren Dornier, Claude's grandson. This 2007 patent eventually evolved into the Dornier S-Ray 007. According to Iren, the S-Ray was based on the 1921 Dornier "Libelle" (Do A).

1939 design which clearly looks to have evolved into the Do 214 flying boat project.

1934 patent submission for a airplane and flying boat which have engines which can tilt upwards. Although the aircraft, as shown in the patent, don't appear to have been further developed, I suspect the technology of the patent found application in the later Dornier Do 26 and Do 212.

This patent, filed in 1978, obviously shows the heritage of the Dornier Do 24. I think this may be a patent pertaining to the Do 26ATT which was built in 1979 and first flown in 1983. It was later updated by Iren Dornier for his world tour flights starting in 2004.

1939 flying boat design. The main focus of the patent is the retractable floats. As described here, I don't recall any Dornier design using them but perhaps the research resulted in the retractable wing floats of the Do 26.

As early as 1941 Dornier filed patents for fitting hydrofoils to flyingboats, shown in
the patent drawing with the Do 18 and Do 26.

Hi

Go to

http://worldwide.espacenet.com/

I would suggest searching on Claude Dornier, Claudius Dornier or Dornier Werke. There are hundreds of patents.

How about this, for example

Thanks for the tip! I guess we've only seen the tip of the iceberg yet...

From My dear Tophe,

who discovered that strange Dornier aircraft concept.

Please, patents like this one should be posted in the Patents section. The idea with
the retractable stubs for example, wasn't used by Dornier, so has no relation to a
"real project"

Amazing discover by my dear Tophe;

it seemed to be a pusher bomber ?.

It's a patent for an engine/prop arrangement for twin engined aircraft, that
has the same frontal area as a single engined type. NOT a patent for a special
aircraft.
