Another technology that never progressed to the series production was the Tu-156

In Flight International 23-29 May 1990 we can read:

"Aeroflot is "sure" to buy the Tu-156 airliner (a derivative of the experimental Tu-155 shown at Hannover airshow. Tupolev is manufacturing the first of 5 prototypes to be completed by 1995. The NK-89 engines will burn methane initially, but later aircraft might use hydrogen."

April 2006...still burning fossil fuel at 75$/barrel. Brilliant!

Yeah, I think its great shame that so little progress has been made with LNG/LH2 propulsion for aircraft.
Tupolev had several proposals for such aircaft, up to the Tu-160V strategic bomber! Below are model pictures of Tu-156 and Tu-206 (based on Tu-204).

No. ;D They don't exist in public domain, as far as I know at least, unfortunately. :(

The Hydrogen Aircraft would not bring any environmental gain, less CO2 maybe, but that's all. The climatic effects are much more than just CO2, the net energy consumption would rise and the cost increase would be dramatic. The technical problems that have to be overcome before a passenger enters a certified hydrogen aircraft are enormuos.

Not only less CO2, but less NOx, soot, particles etc. Actually the only product would be H2O. However I do admit that at those altitudes even it is a problem, not even a small one actually.

the net energy consumption would rise and the cost increase would be dramatic.

Using current power and hydrogen production technologies, yes. But I would envision large-scale use of hydrogen with electric power from fusion power plants and so forth. However that is still quite far in the future...

The technical problems that have to be overcome before a passenger enters a certified hydrogen aircraft are enormuos.

And that's why some effort should be put into solving those problems already now. :)

I agree, there is no future for cowards ;)

The most interesting part of your post is Tupolev-cryo.jpg, which shows profiles of the Tu-130, Tu-230 and Tu-330 transport aircraft.

The Tu-130 is a sort of Russian CN-235, while the Tu-230 is the Tupolev equivilent to the Il-214/MTA.

Periodically, the Tu-330 is still mentioned as a replacement for the moribund An-70.

While they seems quite usual I think that unusual thing behind them that they are designed by guys with average salary of 200-300 bucks per month.

BTW, GenDyn experts found that Tupolev's model shop creation design quite plausable :) I wonder what GRU analytics would conclude about, say, Monogram's Orient Express kit ;D ;D ;D

Flateric that looks very similar tothe Convair Trijet 1971.

The Tupolev Tu-115 (Tu-114VTA?) was military cargo project version of Tu-114 passenger transport.
It was under consideration to fulfill the role ultimately taken on by the Antonov An-22 .

So weird,

I have the same drawing from Kryl'ya Rodine 1/2003,as a Tu-334 aircraft ?!.

That's not weird, because this is Tu-334-100 aka Tu-330 on your drawing.
That's NOT Tu-230 which has twice as low MTOW as Tu-330.

Model of Tupolev Tu-424 found on eBay. Real?

According to the inscription is probably the TU-424
TU-424 is the next upgrading TU-324 and TU-414.
All of these aircraft did not go into a series (not produced).
TU-324 was established a working layout.

Is this "TU-164" effectively a shortened TU-154 fuselage with the wings/empennage/engines of a TU-134?

Terry (Caravellarella)

No my dear Caravellarella,

it was developed in 1960s from Tu-134,and there is no relationship between the recently Tu-154.

No (while it would be practical, I think). Tu-164 project had fuselage diameter 3.3 m, while Tu-154 had 3.8 m (Tu-134 - 2.9 m).

'Unflown Wings' has a relatively large entry on the Tu-164.
To paraphrase; began mid-1960s as a 'small' airbus based on Tu-134 with two D-30 turbofans with a wide 3.3m fuselage for 83-93 passengers. Routes were to be 1-3,000km. Specs are given for the 1968 version.
By the early 1970s the Tu-164 became a Tu-134M airbus with three D-30 Srs 2 (later Srs 3) for 125-152 passengers over 1,700km. Used Tu-154 fuselage (3.8m) married to Tu-134A wings of greater area with leading edge root extensions and improved high-lift devices.
Then it evolved again into a 120-130 seat (80 in a 'destretched' version) twin-engine design with a range of 1,700km (500-700km for 80-seat version). It retained high commonality with Tu-134 and was planned to fly it in 1974 and begin production in 1975. By then was in parallel with Tu-184 studies.

Hi,

there was two Tu-184 and two Tu-194,Tu-184/I was a twin engined airliner with 140-160 passenger
of early 1970sand powered by with two D-30KP engines,Tu-184/II was a three engined airliner of late
1970s,with 200-220 seat,powered by three D-18 engines.

The Tu-194 twin engined airliner for 116 passenger of 1973,and powered by two D-30A engine, and
the Tu-194 three engined airliner, powered by three D-18 engines.

"The Tupolev Tu-107 was a prototype Soviet military transport aircraft developed from the Tupolev Tu-104. It featured a rear ramp loading door and was intended to carry light vehicles, artillery pieces, or up to 70 paratroopers. The fuselage was unpressurized, which meant that passengers would have to use oxygen masks. A single prototype was built and flown, but the aircraft was not put in production."
