Re: Boeing Sea Control Ship (SCS) VTO contender

This is Boeing's Mach 2.8 entry into the Sea Control Ship Fighter Competition. Any idea of a Boeing model number?

It is a "nutcracker design"

Sorry to necro, but I recently started modelling this concept in Maya, and I'm wondering on whether or not the centerline stores are supposed to be on pylons or, as the image in the Secret Projects volume on american fighters seems to suggest, on some sort of semi-recessed/conformal pylon like on the F-14. Also that image has a rather prominent 'step' right behind where the nose gear is, which is not present on the diagrams you've posted. Does anyone know what that is supposed to be?

Boeing VATOL (Vertical Attitude Take Off and Landing) Sea Control Fighter (D-180) shipboard handling.

Please note that contrary to what has been said before, this project didn't go by the designation "D180".

All rotorcraft- or VTOL-related reports at Boeing carried a D*** prefix that may or may not result in a proper BV- designation, depending on the program, but some numbers (and notably D180) were reserved for a great variety of technical reports. Among the projects covered by D180- reports:
  • Lift/Cruise Fan Technology V/STOL Research Airplane (modified T-39)
  • Tilt Nacelle V/STOL Airplane, etc. (various V/STOL studies)
  • Arctic Surface Effect Vehicle Program (a D180- report from 1973)
  • Advanced strike aircraft concept (a D180- report dated August 1979 depicts the Model 987-350 concept)
  • Sea Control Ship (SCS) fighter (covered in this topic)
  • ... and probably many more.
