A new article reproducing a 1938 wind tunnel test report on the Douglas El Segundo Division Project 9 tailless bomber design is now up at RetroMechanix.com:

Project 9 was likely designed (or heavily influenced) by Jack Northrop, who would leave Douglas and form his own independent company the following year. The accompanying gallery features 19 images, with numerous high-res photos and drawings.

I recall seeing an artist's impression of this aircraft in an old issue of Wings or Airpower; I think a scan of it may have been posted on the forum, but I've been unable to locate it. If someone could post it here or provide the URL for the image, I'd like to add a link to it in the article. Thanks!

The following artist impression has been published in the Journal of the AAHS, dated Winter 1996, in a article by Gerald Balzer on the Northrop XP-56.

Cool design. Another fantastic 3D modelling subject too!
Imagine this baby in 8th AF markings, with Davis Manta Fighters as escorts, fighting off He 280s sometime in 1943... B)

You made my heart beatin' on this late evening hour Sky... :)

Jared, thanks for the new article. After the day I had, this more than makes up for it.

Greetings All -

Great stuff Jared - thanks!!

Here's a slightly better drawing of the Model 9 courtesy of the Gerald Balzer Collection.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

According to Alain Pelletier ,author of

'Les Ailes Volantes' and
'Les Avions et Engins Northrop'

it should be a 1937 designs by
R.G.Smith of the El Segundo Division.

No additional info in both books..

Circular Proposal 39-640 corresponded to Draft Spec XC-213. According to my data, Douglas submitted the DB-320 (B-23) for that tender... Could it be that the two branches of Douglas could have submitted separate (and therefore competing) designs?

Yes, it is possible - they submitted separate proposals for the Navy Class VA and LRSA competitions in 1948.

Again , according to A.Pelletier in his affore mentioned books:

...Ce project (model 9) qui ne fut jamais soumis officiellement a l' USAAC...

... This project who never was offically submitted to the USAAC..

I wonder where Hesham have's his info from since the model 9should be 1937
concept for a 1939 competition...

Is this design in any way connected to the XFM-1 Airacuda?

I rather doubt it. The two companies are separated by some 2500 miles and the Airacuda predates it by a fair bit. Other than pusher applications of V1710's, I see very little commonality between them.
