Greetings All -

A recent EPay "win" had me receiving a Curtis Wright High Speed VTOL brochure and a pair of nice pics of the X-18.

A scan of the brochure can be downloaded here:

Anyone else have good drawings or photos of the X-19?

Enjoy the Day! Mark

This and the X-22 are two of my favorite VTOLs.

Wonderful stuff on X-19. To bad they did not have digital fly-by-wire technology back then. Might actually have "quad tilt rotor" aircraft today.
Thanks for the scans.

Greetings All -

A bit pricey but neat nonetheless:

The X-19 was built and flown, is very well documented, and has been preserved in a museum.
For these reasons, it is a little more than a "Postwar Aircraft Project" and seems legitimate enough in the "Aerospace" section.

It hasn't been mentioned in this topic, but if the X-200 prototype had led to a production version it would have been called the C-143. The designation XC-143 was briefly reserved for the X-19 prototype, but later cancelled, so that the "old" C-for transport list stopped at C-142...

Could you clarify what you mean by preserved in a museum; It's legacy? Since the X-19 actually crashed quite spectacularly.

However, I do agree it belongs in Aerospace, since it did actually exist.

Yes, but...

From Wikipedia:

The first flight of the X-19 took place in November 1963 (other sources give 26 June 1964). It was intended that the X-19 would be developed into a VTOL transport aircraft. However the first X-19 was destroyed in a crash on 25 August 1965, and the program was subsequently cancelled. The second prototype is currently being stored in the restoration facilities at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

Sundog, by "preserved" I didn't mean "restored" of course, but the airframe is still there, and in a condition that could lead to a clean restoration for static display I guess.

Thank you! That's awesome. I forgot they had a second demonstrator/prototype. I would love to see it restored.

Not to worry, the mistake is understandable since several sources have claimed there only was one prototype...

Re: Curtiss Wright VTOL Model

Yeah... I was about to commit when I saw I would have to go to New Jersey to get it. Bummer. :-[
