In the mid-1960s, McDonnell Aircraft Company conducted a wide survey of all existing VTOL and VSTOL design configurations. A a means to easily summarize their research into a diagram that would be at once synthetic, compact and logical, they produced this now famous illustration shaped like a wheel, which shows the various families of vehicles and provides an example for each particular configuration.
