Hi

We can see this 3 views drawing in Les avions Bernard, Jean Liron, DOCAVIA/Editions Larivière, 1990 (page 84). But it's wrote : Hydravion Bernard bimoteur de vitesse pour coupe Schneider 1933, type non déterminé (bi-engined Bernard float racer for 1933 Schneider Cup, without name).

On pages 83 and 85, it's said that the plane was a Bernard project with two Farman engines. The french Commission des marchés (Committee/board for/of buyings/dealings ?) refused (it's not said when) to give funds for this plane.

Plane :
Length : 10.81 m
span : 11 m
foreseen speed : more than 700 km/h

Engines :
2 x 18 cylinders Farman 18 T with 1200 hp each

In Les avions Farman, Jean Liron, DOCAVIA/Editions Larivière, 1984, there is only some words on page 216. The name for the plane is Bernard HV. But all the Bernard float racers were named HV.

Hi Deltafan,

I don´t know nothing about this two books, my source is Jet & Prop. Thanks. ;)

from Le Trait d'Union #146 (November-December 1992).
Also:
a Bernard racer project of 1931 used 2 Farman 18T engines of 1,480hp in tandem, for Shneider Trophy, to overcome seaplanes with floats. Tested in wind tunnel, it could have reached 700km/h. Rejected by the Service Technique as too ambitious. All metal, unbuilt.

Still in the Trait d’Union #146 Nov. Dec. 1992, a Bernard racer project of 1932 used 2 Hispano 18 Sb engines of 1,100hp in the hull, to beat the speed record for flying boats. The medium wing was touching water without need of extra floats. Taking off on catapult, going down on water as glider with coaxial propellers locked horizontal. Unbuilt.

Hi everyone,

While searching the web for Schneider Cup racers, several photos of French racers turned up. One in particular is the Bernard HV-40. A check of Charles Mendenhall's THE AIR RACER turned up nothing as far as drawings go. Does anyone have a 3-view of this racer and the others by Bernard that followed?

Thanks,

Fishjay

Thanks, the drawings are awesome. Does anyone know why these fantastic planes did not compete in any of the races?

Lester (fishjay)

::) And the HV-320, equipped with a Renault 12Ncr engine (compared to the HV-220's Loraine "Radium" 12Rcr).
Source: Unknown.

Slight changes compared to the HV-220:
Span + 0,16m
Area: + 0,31m2
Lenght: - 0,27m

Basically, both the planes, and especially the engines, were insufficiently developed in time for the contests.
See Putnam's 'Schneider Trophy Aircraft', pp. 232-239 for more details.

cheers,
Robin.

According to Charles Claveau in Le Trait d'Union no.205, the twin-engined push-pull project was called HV.100.

I did some insufficient treatment.
