VFAX was a multi-purpose fighter/attack requirement which led to the pure fighter VFX requirement that spawned the F-14.


These models believed to be Vought VFAX design V-484

Last week's visit to the Vought Archives uncovered these two images - they look to be the models in Overscan's posting back on Page 2 of this thread and show the differences in the hinge point for the wing sweep. Neither have the anhedral horizontal stabilizers of the later V507 iterations. I have photos I took of an actual model of the later V507 - as per the drawings Photogator posted on Page 5 - which is in the possession of the Frontiers of Flight Museum. I'll post those shortly.

Great, as usual ! According to the Vought project model list, V-484 was a 1965 proposal for the VFAX program, a fighter-bomber for the Navy.
 
Moved to own topic.

Tommy provided a viewgraph drawing with V-484 and and F8E overlaid; I have attempted to remove the F8E leaving just the V-484.

I've moved this from the VFX topic for discussion. I think it was actually designed to VFAX, the first requirement of that name prior immediately preceding the VFX.

Vought VFAX studies started from July 1965, their FX work about the same time. The final V-483-149 design from 1967 was VG, and when scaled up became the V-505, then V-507 VFX designs.

The other possibility is the design was aimed at the later VFAX requirement, but then the twin seat near-identical USAF model seen in American Secret Projects makes less sense - what requirement was it aimed at?
 
Hey Overscan - that line drawing you have posted that Tommy provided of the Vought V-484 and F8E overlaid - cant I ask that you post the original so as to see the size difference please? ??? ;D

You may find it has a closer relationship with Dassault than that of Panavia!

I'm not questioning the relationship. I'm only saying that in the underside view in that artwork, the aircraft resembles the MRCA.

Thanks to Secret Projects members' donations and Mark Nankivil, 1968 Vought V-484 VFAX artwork and undated "Advanced Fighter" which appears to be a variant of it.

In scanning the V-507 images posted in a different thread, there was a photo of a
configuration board with a few models off to the side. What caught my eye was a
twin-tailed V-484. I had not seen that configuration before now.


I grabbed the piece of the photo with the model and am presenting it here.

Can anyone with a copy of American Secret Projects Fighters confirm that the USAF model 484 lookalike pictured in that book is in Air Superiority blue. I cannot find my copy but am pretty sure it was
The model would then have dated from the early 70s which was the heyday of that colour scheme.
Which is something of a puzzle as the USAF alteady had F15 so why would it need 484? Unless it was aimed at replacing the F106 like the F14 variant offered by Grumman?

Are you talking about the "possibly Model 483" fixed wing model? There's no 'USAF Model 484' in ASP.

I believe V-483 was not fixed wing. Vought FX studies were from the earliest phases of FX when VG was pretty much universal, and they then partnered with Lockheed on VFX and FX with Vought leading on VFX and Lockheed on FX. Vought lost VFX and Lockheed never even submitted a final FX design.

The model labelled as 'possibly V-483' seems to be the same design as 'Deep Strike 1' Navy study configuration from 1968-1970. The model in USAF markings is pictured with the V-2000 which was studied in 1971 - 1973 timeframe, partly under "Advanced Tactical Fighter" theme. Perhaps this is where this model is from.

Paul Thank you. My own copy is in one of the piles of books created by my Lockdown attempts at reorganising them.
My recollection was mistaken. The air superiority blue VG Vought 484 lookalike is in the Sir George Cox collection which I was able to see last year.
 
The referenced Air Superiority Blue aircraft came to the Cox collection from mine. 3rd shelf down..... enjoy.
