Hi,

I found this title in the JAAHS,about the Vultee XC1031,does anyone
know it ?,and was it an aircraft or not ?.

http://www.aeroknow.com/magazines/jas.htm

If you browse further down in the page, you will also find a "Vultee XP1015" mentioned. I noticed these a long time ago and had forgotten about them... thanks for the reminder. I do not know other designations in that Vultee design series, but I believe these must refer to an "eXperimental Cargo" and an "eXperimental Pursuit". I'd be very interested to know more about these two (presumably unbuilt) projects, so if anyone owns the Spring '88 issue of the Journal of the American Aviation Historical Society or can access it in a public library, more info and/or a scan would be MUCH appreciated!

Re: Question about Vultee XC1031 and XP1015

The AAHS article (Vol. 23, No. 1, p. 18-22) is a reminiscence by aircraft engineer Dusty Carter, who began his career in 1936 as an apprentice at Vultee. The article ("Vultee 'P-38'") has two drawings that may be of interest, but nothing about Vultee project nomenclature. In passing, however, it does mention that Curtiss also submitted a design for the competition leading to the USAAC's P-38 program.

Wow. Thank you so much, Clioman, for solving the mystery! I'd never seen these designs before. ;)

Thank you my dear Clioman very much,it is nice to know Vultee projects.

Maybe this is usefull.
....Preliminary designs were identified by a sequential number , prefixed by
a letter denoting the type. For example XP 1015 (Experimental Interceptor Pursuit)
and XC 1031 (Experimental Commercial)...

ref: Vultee chapter in General Dynamics and their Predecessors-Putnam.

P.S. I think the above mentioned designs never received a Vultee model number.
'35' seems a bit to low for the twinengined pursuit design competing for
what became the the P-38...

Hi all,

I believe the XC.1031 was the Vultee Model 41, because this was the only "2-place cabin project" by Vultee. (Source: Vultee Aircraft 1932-1947 by Jonathan Thompson).

Likely a Lambert M-5(?)
They only produced that engine type alongside the R-270.

No mention of a engine type number in the AAHS text..
