Russian researchers study elliptical-fuselage 'EkoJet' concept

The idea is apparently still alive, though it seams to have lost its twin vertical stabilisers. No idea what they expect to gain from from the flattened crosssection except more wetted area and a bunch of structural problems - I thought the A380 tall elliptical section was pretty crazy.

While the proposed design would fit the niche occupied by the high-capacity Ilyushin Il-86, the organisation behind it, Rosaviakonsortsium, says the EkoJet's take-off weight would be some 80t lighter.

These renderings give no indication of the proposed engine location but I do like the incredibly high aspect ratio wings and fins. Perhaps they're trying to get to U2 altitudes to save fuel.

Don't read much into the wing design as depicted, it's a finite element analysis model which incorporates only the primary structural members. What you see is probably just the wing box without LE/TE devices.

Ecojet promises economy with three aisles

Dubbed “Eco-jet”, this twin-engined transport would seat between 280 and 350 passengers in a wide, ovoid fuselage – reminiscent in shape to designs proposed for the Airbus A3XX over a decade ago.
With a fuselage cross-section which is considerably wider than the Airbus A330/A340 or Boeing 777, the Eco-jet would accommodate three-aisle cabin layouts with seats 10-abreast, or 11-abreast in a high density arrangement.
According to data shown to delegates at the Wings of Russia International Aviation Forum in Moscow this week, the Eco-jet would be able to fly a payload of 200 passengers 3,350 nm., or 352 passengers around 1,100nm.

Interesting design, but there is the danger that it may be edged out, commercially speaking, by propfan designs and the like.
 
So TsAGI is directly involved with this design. Even more interesting. Hmmm. If the consortium can pull this off, it might just be the boot in the rear that the Russian aviation industry in general needs. Assuming, of course, that they can prevent EADS or one of the PRC companies from doing a 'smash and grab' on their hard work!

Russian developers of a 300-seat aircraft with a characteristic wide elliptical fuselage have opted to modify the proposal substantially, revising the design as a four-engined transport rather than a twinjet.

The aircraft – developed by Frigate Ecojet, and rebranded as the 'Freejet' – will be powered by modern engines introduced for the single-aisle market.

Frigate Ecojet says it has embarked on a study to examine the use of Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines on the proposed aircraft. The PD-14 is being developed for the Irkut MC-21.

Aviadvigatel is participating in the study, it claims.

But the Ecoject team also indicates that the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G and the CFM International Leap are options.

It states that, while the aircraft was conceived as a twinjet, there is a "lack" of modern engines in the 18,000-23,000kg (177-226kN) thrust range. The twinjet would have been equipped with PD-18R or PS-90A20 engines.

But the design has been revamped as a four-engined airframe powered by engines with 12,000-14,000kg thrust. Its proposed maximum take-off weight has risen from just under 130t to a little over 140t.

"We lost a little in aerodynamics and weight [against the original Ecojet] but gained a lot of advantages," says programme manager Alexander Klimov.

The aircraft will be able to use current engine technology and will aid the evolution of an all-electric concept, he says.

Switching to a four-engined design, however, will result in an aircraft outwardly resembling the Airbus A340 – which, like the proposed Freejet, was also fitted with powerplants used on the single-aisle A320 and Boeing 737.

With an all-economy layout for 300 passengers in a 10-abreast triple-aisle cabin, the Freejet would have a range of 3,500km, claim its designers, increasing to 4,680km with 244 passengers.

The aircraft, with eight passenger exits, has a wing span of 48.53m and a length of 49.65m.

Technical specifications for the Freejet's systems will be established by the end of the year, the developer says.
