British asymmetric aircraft 1943!
« on: September 26, 2010, 02:07:35 am »
I am glad I found today (and added on my asymmetric aircraft site http://cmeunier.chez-alice.fr/Asymm_addition.htm ) a British patent of the warbird years involving strong asymmetry. I would have loved such a Spitfire, but even as an unbuilt Patent, it is pleasant.
Entlwistle GB562109, filed 1943 published 1944

This patent is about hinging wings and control surfaces at the point where they attach to the fuselage.
It isn't really clear why the author has chosen to include an asymmetric layout as one example, especially as he says 'Diagram 5 is a sketch of such an arrangement, but is schematic only, no provision being shown for meeting the asymmetric thrust'. In other words he is aware that it is not a viable design.

Having seen a few of these types here and there, what IS the point to them?
