General Dynamics Convair Models 200 / 201 / 218 Sea Control Ship fighters

It's hard to NOT like the Convair Model 200! Even without mentioning the F-35...

Hi,

I don't remember where I found this drawing to Convair sea control ship fighter,
it shows its weapon loading.

That's the Flight Simulator model which you can find at Razbam. I fly it every now and then in the sim (FSX).

A more general question: How exact are those FS renderings, especially with regards
to weapons and payloads ? I just ask, because my son is playing a WW II simulation
in the moment and the aircraft are rendered really beautifully, but the choice of
weapons you have for each type often makes me laugh.

When I created the Convair 201 model I made an educated guess and added the wing and centerline pylons to it, because I felt the payload capability would otherwise be ludicrously small.

Thanks for this explanation ! You stayed on the plausible side, I think, the designers of the
mentioned computer games often not !

Robert Bradley’s “Convair Advanced Designs II” has lots of interesting new information and imagery about the Convair Model 200. Including an inboard profile of what appears to be an earlier design. This version looks like it has larger lift engines as their bay extends to the aft of the aircraft well past the leading edge of the wing. But what is most interesting about this configuration is it has two internal guns.

The artwork we had previously of the Model 200 shows a scabbed on gun pod (20mm M61 Vulcan) located either under the left fuselage or under the right nose (with undercarriage offset to the left). But this design appears to have two single barrel, revolver cannons located in the fuselage. One ABOVE each of the intake ducts just under the skin of the aircraft’s back. The muzzles of these guns are located about level with the wing’s leading edge above the intake ducts. Any muzzle gas would be taken away by the slipstream well before the intake and likewise muzzle flash would not disturb the pilot. But tracers whizzing past his head at chin level might! The ammunition is located in two boxes right behind the aft lift jet with the right box feeding the left gun and vice versa.

The guns look like Aden, Defa, M39 types but it’s hard to tell from the imagery. Anyway it’s a very unique gun configuration and well worth further investigation.

Cutaway Convair Model 200 Sea Control Fighter
The Convair Model 200 was proposed in June 1972 to respond to the US Navy request for designs for a fighter/attack aircraft for the Sea Control ships. The VTOL aircraft would have used a PW401 engine with an afterburning 3BSD plus twin Allison XJ99 lift engines located behind the cockpit for added vertical lift forward of the center of gravity to balance the aft nozzle thrust.

Sea Control Fighter Landings At Sea
To deal with ground environment generated by the combination of the afterburning rear nozzle and the high temperatures and pressures of the lift engines, ships from which the Sea Control Fighter operated would be equipped with special vertical landing areas with metal grates to allow the hot air flow to pass through.

Does anyone have any info on what the radius of action of the Model 200 was expected to be? The operational concept was interceptor for the Sea Control Ship, so it probably needed to be able to take out Backfires and Bears at or beyond the range of the Kh-22 (AS-4).

Without a doubt the CV-201 is one of my favourite aircraft to fly in Strike Fighters 2

Makes you wonder how things might have been different if they'd built this in place of the F/A-18A/D & AV-8B.

And the F-16 and maybe the Sea Harrier. A common lightweight fighter across most of the western air forces and navies. And if the Model 200 is a production airplane that means you have to have the F401 as a production jet so you have the F-14B. Which means more than Maverick doesn't have a TF30 flameout and gets in the flat spin that kills Goose but that it is has far better flight performance. F401 could also mean a major F-111 MLU in the 1980s?

Scanned from the Senate hearings in March 1975.

Thanks Gentlemans!

There is plenty of info/pics on the Convair 200/201 projects on this forum (a highly documented and illustrated topic of its own), but you can't just start a new topic and ask randomly for information when you're interested in a certain type without checking what's already there beforehand... The first thing to do is use the Search engine and IF the subject hasn't already been tackled THEN you can start a topic (and from experience I can assure you that there aren't too many projects that haven't...).

It's interesting to speculate how things might have turned out differently if they had chosen the Model 200 instead of the XFV-12. :p :'(

In the third painting there appears to be a CL-84 in the background on the flight deck. What are the VG-wing fighters flying overhead? They don't appear to be F-14s and I wondered if they represented another GD project?

Some variant of the Model 44, I would assume.
